"app"??? for what hardware?

PC can detect "proper" wifi signals, as can some mobile phones (ones with wifi)

not sure what OTHER signals you're hoping to detect though

have you tried different channels on your access point?

try 1, 6 and 11 - from what I've read, other channels are pretty much pointless due to "overlap" ... BUT ... of course, you MAY get a better signal on 3,4 or 8,9 if you have a LOT of shit on 1, 6 and 11 around you - better than nothing

well

i figure i'm going to insall an app on my laptop

'see' what's around, phones (smart dumb), try to isolate the source of the interference, and, smash it with a hammer

yeah, ok ...

still I don't think the humble wifi adapter can "detect" anything other than humble wifi

here's an interesting article in wikipedia

nope - not that I'm aware

www.thinkgeek.com/ga...electronic/c240/

www.metageek.net/

DIY - www.wireless.org.au/...~jhecker/specan/

all these are not "wifi" specific ... so they detect ALL signals in the wifi spectrum

Cordless phones, Panasonic particularly, are renowned for 2.4Ghz interference, even neighbors using them.

I don't know if this is what you were after. It's seems to be more meant for finding an access point.
